Official Rules and Terms

  1. Challenge Overview

The HL7 AI Challenge is a global innovation competition organized by Health Level Seven International (HL7). This challenge invites participants worldwide to design, develop, and demonstrate cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions that leverage HL7 standards to improve information technology solutions supporting health, health care, and public health. The challenge seeks to identify how HL7 is helping to enable solutions driving efficacy, efficiency, interoperability, processes and workflow, decision-support.

The challenge aims to foster AI-driven health IT applications that are standards-compliant, globally relevant, scalable, and support the highest ethics.

  1. Who Can Participate. Anyone that meets the criteria to become an HL7 member is eligible to participate. HL7 eligibility requirements can be found at https://www.hl7.org/legal/tc.cfm, including but not limited to:

    • Individuals 18 years and older

    • Teams of collaborators submitting as a joint submission

    • Companies

    • Academic and research institutions

    • Government and nonprofit organizations

Individual and directly affiliated organizations and personnel (and immediate family members) that are or have been involved in the establishment, execution, judging, or administration of this Challenge are prohibited from participating. Participation from members of the HL7 Board of Directors, affiliated organizations, HL7 Staff is prohibited. Any HL7 contract staff and associated organizations with involvement with the AI Pledge are also prohibited from participating.

Violation of these Terms of Use may result in disqualification from the HL7 AI Challenge as determined in our sole discretion.

  1. How to Register

We request notification of Intention to Submit, via an email to AI-challenge@hl7.org containing the following details by the posted dates. Submission dates will be made public via the HL7 website and are subject to change.

Details Include:

    • Primary Contact Name and Details (Email, phone, etc)

    • Team name (if applicable)

    • Team participants (if applicable)

    • Organization (if applicable)

    • Country of residence

    • Brief description of your submission topic/concept

  1. Deliverables

The submission form highlights the content requirements for the submission, including an executive summary, solution narrative, and demonstration video. Submitters may optionally include additional technical materials to support claims made in the submission.

The content of the submission (exempting technical materials as noted) will be licensed to HL7 for its use in contest evaluation, marketing, and industry publication purposes. All supporting documentation will be treated as confidential and used solely for evaluation purposes. It will not be disclosed, reproduced, or shared with any third party without the explicit, written consent of the submitter, except as required by law.

  1. Evaluation Criteria

Solutions will be evaluated by a panel of international experts based upon the content of the submission, considering the originality, impact, use of HL7 standards, and fitness of the submission against the published evaluation factors. Decisions by the judging panel are final.

  1. Awards

The HL7 AI Challenge awardees will be publicly recognized in both on-line and in-person forum, will receive marketing recognition as part of HL7’s Ai communications and marketing activities, will receive a certificate of award, and privilege to use the HL7 AI Challenge Winner logo. Winning submitters will be promoted through HL7 events, publications, and partners, and will receive recognition at an HL7 Plenary meeting.

  1. Intellectual Property. Intellectual property of the submission form, except as indicated, will be subject to the HL7 Intellectual Property Policy as published at https://www.hl7.org/legal/ippolicy.cfm.   HL7 retains a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use materials for promotional, educational, and demonstration purposes.   HL7 shall make no claim to the intellectual property of the AI solution, code, algorithm, or other technology components as part of this challenge. The participants retain all rights to the intellectual property presented during the challenge.

  2. Data Use & Compliance

No personally-identifiable or protected health information is to be provided as part of the submission. While solutions may leverage such data as part of their operating solutions, measures must be taken not to share or disclose any such information to HL7. The HL7 Community has available multiple synthetic data sets that are available for contest use.

  1. Code of Conduct

All participants shall conduct themselves professionally and respectfully, promote the appropriate and ethical use of AI, and in good faith take mitigating steps to address innate AI bias. HL7 reserves the right to disqualify any team for breaches of ethics or conduct.

  1. Terms & Legal Notices

    • By registering, participants agree to these official rules and HL7's privacy policy.

    • HL7 reserves the right to modify rules, dates, and judging processes at its discretion.

    • No cash prizes are to be awarded.  

    • All decisions of the judging panel are final and binding.
