Submission Categories
The HL7 AI Challenge will recognize multiple winners and may present more than one award within a category. Categories were selected based on their potential to impact healthcare and health IT through innovative, effective, and practical AI applications. The categories include:
- Clinical Quality Improvement
Solutions that improve care delivery, clinical outcomes, or quality (e.g., identifying inconsistencies in care delivery or enhancing clinical decision support)
- Efficiency and Effectiveness
Solutions that streamline administrative tasks, operations, or data sharing (e.g., analyzing discharge data to optimize patient cohort identification for specialty treatment)
- Process Improvement
Tools that enhance reliability, consistency, and management of healthcare processes (e.g., AI-driven automation for referrals or task routing)
- Job Aids
Solutions that reduce provider fatigue, cognitive burden, or stress (e.g., using generative AI for documentation, patient instructions or progress notes)
- Other
Please select your preferred evaluation category on the submission form. The Challenge Team may reassign categories based on the evidence provided.
Each submission is eligible to submit in only one category.
Challenge winners will be awarded in each category subject to satisfying contest criteria. Judges may additionally choose to make specialty awards. Decisions of the judges are final. No cash prizes will be awarded.
Evaluation Process
The Challenge aims to showcase leading innovators and solutions, build a catalog of AI best practices in healthcare, grow a community of interest and practice, and explore how HL7 can better support AI-related needs.
Submissions will be assessed based on functional, technical, and impact-related criteria.
The evaluation factors that will be specifically considered as part of assessment of the submissions are detailed in the table that follows:
Functional Evaluationwill assess the value, impact, and benefit of the solution to the health industry.
