    Build for the Public Good 

    HL7 Break the Code is a free, year-long student experience presented by HL7 International in partnership with the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The program transforms curiosity about health technology into practical, career-ready skills.

    Across the Fall and Spring challenges, students learn directly from HL7 International, build one working FHIR application each semester, explore the responsible use of AI, and connect with professionals shaping the future of healthcare interoperability.

    No previous coding or FHIR experience is required. Join the inaugural 2026–2027 cohort and finish the year with two working applications you can showcase to future employers.

    HL7 Break the Code: Final Program Overview

    Tuesday, September 29, 2026 | 8:00–9:00 pm ET

    Join this final information session before Break the Code registration closes. Students and educators will receive an overview of the two-semester experience, working applications, competitions, credentials, learning resources, and participation requirements. The session will include extended time for questions and is open to both returning attendees and those discovering the program for the first time.

    Healthcare depends on information moving safely and clearly between hospitals, clinics, laboratories, insurers, public health agencies, applications, and patients. Break the Code helps students understand how that exchange works and gives them the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. No previous coding or FHIR experience is required.

    The program follows a beginner-friendly, two-semester structure aligned with the academic year.

    2026 Fall Semester (October - December):
    Students learn the foundations of FHIR and healthcare interoperability while receiving step-by-step guidance to build their first working FHIR application in response to a real-world healthcare challenge.

    2027 Spring Semester (January - March):
    Students build a second, more advanced FHIR application that applies their growing skills and explores the responsible use of AI in healthcare technology.


    Throughout both semesters, students learn directly from the HL7 community, receive practical support, connect with health technology professionals, and participate in individual challenges. By the end of the program, they can have two working applications to show future employers, practical experience solving healthcare problems, and official HL7 credentials recognizing the skills they have demonstrated.
